Will Clorox Clean Concrete?
Table of Contents
Concrete is prone to many types of dirt and stains. Mostly, concrete gets soiled from dirt, algae, mold, mildew and other environmental elements. Concrete driveways suffer from oil-based stains and more stubborn problems.
Clorox bleach can be used as a preparatory cleaner on some stains, and can remove dirt and kill algae on other areas.
Cleaning Concrete
A simple solution of household bleach poured onto the problem area followed by a hot water rinse should remove dirt, grime, mold and mildew. In some instances, using a scrubber or a broom with the bleach solution will release the embedded dirt. Concrete is porous and will retain odors as well as stains. A great remedy for cat urine (or other pet urine) is to use Clorox ProResults Outdoor Bleach. Pour Clorox on the affected area, allow the bleach to soak into the surface for a short time, then follow with a hot water rinse. In extreme cases, the concrete may need to be sealed to eliminate the odor permanently. For oil stains and other stubborn stains, pre-washing the concrete surface with bleach will prepare the area for a further power wash. In most cases, this will remove the stains. Clorox can be diluted to the strength needed for the particular project.
Types of Concrete Surfaces
There are many different types of concrete surfaces that can be cleaned using Clorox, including driveways and walkways. But there are other outdoor concrete surfaces that need periodic cleaning. Water fountains are prone to dirt, grime, mold and mildew and can be easily cleaned using Clorox. Basement walls that have accumulated mildew or mold can be easily cleaned using a spray solution of Clorox. Retaining walls, patios, statues and birdbaths all could use a good cleaning with bleach periodically.
Types of Bleach
Simple household bleach can clean many of the problem surfaces mentioned. Clorox has developed a new line of ProResults products for outdoor cleaning. Clorox ProResults Outdoor Bleach Cleaner is one of these products. It is specifically designed to clean and protect outdoor surfaces. This outdoor bleach cleans concrete as well as other outdoor items. It is also safe for the environment. The thicker consistency allows for more control and it includes a special protector for metal surfaces.
Tips
When using Clorox outdoors, keep in mind that household bleach is also used as a weed killer, so it most likely will kill any grass that gets saturated. Be careful not to get the bleach on the soles of shoes, which can track it indoors. It will make stains on carpet and some flooring materials. Always use rubber gloves to protect your hands. The new Clorox ProResults Outdoor Bleach is safe to use with plants and grass as long as it is used as directed.
Safety Precautions
Always remember to read the label and to not mix bleach with ammonia. This can result in a toxic gas. Before mixing bleach with any other product, consult the product information for specific chemical information.
