If this happens--and some fecal matter gets on the mattress--the mattress will have to be cleaned. The sooner the mattress is cleaned, the better.

Things You Will Need

  • Plastic gloves
  • Plastic bag
  • Paper towels
  • Folex carpet cleaner
  • Old rags
  • Vinegar
  1. Put on some plastic gloves. Pick up any clumps of feces with some paper towels. Place them in a plastic bag. Tie the plastic bag up. Throw it immediately in to the trash cans outside.

  2. Spray the soiled area with Folex carpet cleaner. Yes, this product was made mainly for carpets, but it also gets stains out of upholstery and clothing. It is enzyme-based so it will be more effective at getting rid of the brown stain on your mattress. Let the spray sit for ten minutes.

  3. Use some old rags to begin sopping up the stain and the stain remover liquid. You may need to press down hard and move the rag to scrub the spot a little. Repeat a second time if there is still a little bit of the poop stain left.

  4. Cover the soiled area in vinegar. Let it sit for ten minutes. The Folex cleans the soiled area, but you need the vinegar to get rid of the strong odor. Use some more clean rags to soak up some of the vinegar.

  5. Take your mattress outside if possible to air dry. This is the best way to ensure that your mattress smells fresh when you are done cleaning it. If you can't do this, set up some fans in your bedroom and open your bedroom windows.
