How to Wash a Shower Curtain Liner in the Washing Machine

Louise Harding

Bathroom ensembles can be as simple as a plastic shower curtain hung from plain metal hooks, to elaborate, accessorized curtains and valances, tiebacks and fabric over plastic liners on expensive rings or hooks. No matter how plain or fancy the shower curtain, mold and soap scum will spoil the effect.

Luckily, washing the shower curtain liner is a simple process.

Tip

Any easy way to dry is to simply re-hang the shower curtain liner on the hooks on the shower rod and tuck inside the tub so the liner drips dry in the tub. Some shower curtain liners can be placed in the dryer for a few minutes to “warm” out any wrinkles.

  1. Remove the shower curtain liner from the shower rod and verify that all curtain rings and hooks have been removed.

  2. Place the shower curtain liner and two towels into the wash machine, set on the smallest load the wash machine offers. The towels provide friction to help scrub the curtain clean.

  3. Fill the washer with cold water and pour in enough clothes detergent for a small load, according to the detergent manufacturer’s directions. Run the wash load as normal.

  4. Remove the shower curtain liner as soon as the load is finished and hang to dry so any wrinkles fall out during the drying process.
