How to Get Rid of Spray Paint on a Wood Floor

Kimbry Parker

Finding spray paint on your wood floor is disheartening. Hardwood flooring is not just an aesthetic addition to your home, it’s an investment. Spray paint splatters diminish the appearance and quality of the wood flooring.

Clean spray paint from wood flooring at first sight for best results.

Remove spray paint from wood floors with the right products and methods to ensure the paint is gone without compromising the integrity of the wood.

Warning

Wear rubber gloves and work in a well-ventilated area when using acetone or mineral spirits. Both products are flammable so keep them away from extreme heat or open flame. Keep these products out of reach of children and pets.

  1. Combine 1/4 cup lemon juice and 3/4 cup rubbing alcohol into a bowl. Dip a soft toothbrush into the mixture and begin scrubbing away as much of the paint as possible.

  2. Scrape up more paint with a dull butter knife. Add more of the alcohol and lemon juice mixture to soften the paint. Continue applying the cleaning mixture with the toothbrush, then scraping with the butter knife until no more paint is coming off the wood.

  3. Moisten a soft, clean rag with acetone. Rub the acetone-soaked rag over the spot to remove the rest of the paint. Switch to a clean part of the rag after each swipe to avoid reapplying the paint to the floor. Go over the area with a clean, dry rag to remove the residue.

  4. Clean the area with a soft cloth and mineral spirits to remove any remaining traces of paint from the floor. Once all the spray paint is gone, wash the wood floor with a hardwood floor cleaner.
