How to Remove Chocolate Stains From Silk

Erica Roth

Silk clothing is elegant, refined and beautiful, until you notice you have a chocolate stain on your garment. Chocolate can create stubborn stains that are difficult to remove from clothing, especially from silk. The key to removing chocolate stains from silk is to work carefully so as not to damage the fabric.

  1. Remove as much of the chocolate from the silk as soon as you notice it, before it begins to set deeply into the silk. Use a blunt butter knife, a spoon or even a rigid piece of cardboard to gently lift the chocolate off of the material.

  2. Read the care tags on your silk garment carefully before you begin your heavy-duty stain lifting. Due to the delicate nature of silk, you may not be able to use certain chemicals to remove stains.

  3. Use a dab of a mild dish-washing soap or liquid hand soap and a soft cloth or clean sponge to try to remove the chocolate stain from the silk clothing. Lightly rub the soap into the spot with warm water. Scrubbing too vigorously may rip or otherwise damage the fibers.

  4. Rinse out the silk item and allow it to dry. You can either let it air dry or put it in the clothes dryer on an air-only cycle to prevent shrinkage.

  5. Look at your silk clothing in a natural light when it is dry to determine if the chocolate stains have been completely removed. If stains remain, apply a laundry-stain pre-treatment that is safe to use on silk (read the label on the bottle before using) and wash again. You may need to wash your silk several times to eliminate the chocolate stains.
