How to Make a Clear Vinyl Book Protector

Whether you paid a few dollars or several hundred dollars for a book, covering it will protect your investment.
Book covers extend the life of your book.
Book protectors prevent liquid spills from soiling covers, and they also minimize wear and tear when you toss the book in a bag or carry it to the beach. While common household items such as paper grocery bags are often used as covers, clear vinyl provides greater protection, and it allows you to read the title and see the jacket design. .

Step 1

Roll out the liner or sheeting and center the open book in the middle, ensuring that the vinyl is longer than your book on all sides.

Step 2

Measure a straight line 3 inches around all sides of the book. Mark this on the vinyl in pencil.

Step 3

Cut the vinyl along the pencil lines and center the book again in the middle of the vinyl.

Step 4

Make a pencil mark on the vinyl along the top and bottom binding of the book only and do not draw past the right and left edges of the book. This will leave several inches of vinyl remaining above and below the right and left sides of the book.

Step 5

Cut away just the section above and below the pencil marks to create an H-shape with a very wide middle section.

Step 6

Fold the top and bottom pieces of the right flap toward the center of the vinyl, and repeat the process on the other side. Make the folds where the edge of the book meets the vinyl.

Step 7

Place the open book in the middle of the vinyl. Re-fold the top and bottom pieces toward the book jacket.

Step 8

Fold over the right flap toward the binding until it meets the outer edge of the book, then allow about 1/8- to 1/4-inch of space in each long fold to allow the book to easily close.

Step 9

Tear off a piece of double-sided tape to secure the right bottom edges of the flap and the main cover, creating a pocket. Repeat the process with the top, making sure you don't tape the vinyl to the book; the vinyl pieces are taped to each other.

Step 10

Repeat the process with the left side. Insert the front and back covers of the book into the pockets.

Step 11

Close the book and use your fingers to smooth the vinyl along the book’s spine.
