How to Make Cleaning Solution for Fences & Decks

Over the years, your home's fence and deck has been bombarded with dirt, dust and grime.

You may have used a commercial deck and fence cleaner to maintain the surfaces, but the cleaners are becoming too expensive to buy regularly. There are other options, including making your own fence and deck cleaning solution. The ingredients are easy to mix and are safe to use on your fence and deck. .

Put on a pair of rubber gloves, safety goggles, a nose mask and a shirt with long sleeves.

Mix in a bucket one cup of trisodium phosphate, one cup of chlorine bleach and one gallon of warm water.

Agitate the mixture with a long-handled brush.

Soak any plants, shrubs or grass close to the fence or deck you are cleaning with water from your power washer or water hose. This will keep the cleaning solution from sticking to the plants, shrubs and grass.

Wet the fence or deck you want to clean with water from a hose that has a sprayer.

If you have a pressure washer, use a 25-degree spray nozzle, set the PSI to a low setting and wet the fence or deck. Wetting the fence or deck will keep dust and debris from sticking to them.

Apply the cleaning solution with a long-handled brush or deck brush. Work in sections and completely soak the surface with the solution.

Scrub the fence or deck with the long-handled brush or deck brush. Rinse the fence or deck with water from a hose or power washer set on a low to medium setting.

Repeat steps six and seven for the next section of fence or deck you need to clean. Rinse any plants, shrubs and grass with water after you are done cleaning your fence or deck to remove any cleaner from them.
