How to Level Out a Warped Wood Floor
A hardwood floor becomes warped because of exposure to high humidity or water. Some woods are more vulnerable to moisture than others. The way you level a warped wood floor hinges on how severely it is warped. Floors with extensive warping damage are almost certainly going to need to be replaced. Minor warping can often be fixed by trying a couple of fairly simply procedures.
Lower the humidity in the room with a dehumidifier. Place fans in windows and blow dry hot air into the room from outside, if possible. Run dehumidifiers in the basement underneath the floor that has warped.
Wait to see if the floor levels out on its own after the wood has dried.
If the warping has not gone away, place damp towels on the damaged wood planks for 48 hours. The water from the towels will help soften the wood so it can be reshaped.
Drill a series of holes every three inches apart in any warped planks.
Insert wood screws into the planks with a screwdriver to put pressure on the wood and flatten it out.
Gently pry out any wood planks that are still warped with a hammer and chisel.
Sand along the edges of the boards to remove a little wood. The extra room will allow the boards to expand. The warping may go away because the boards won't expand against each other and will have more room to flatten out.
Place the boards back into the floor and nail them down.
- You might also be able to fix very minor warping by nailing down the warped parts of the board. Sanding down the floor and removing the finish will help speed up the drying process. Be aware you may have more warping in some months of the year than others because of the humidity in warm months.
- It may take weeks, or even months, for the wood to completely dry.
