How to Convert Generators to Propane

The reasons to run a home generator on propane gas are compelling. Propane gas doesn't break down like unleaded gasoline, so there are no deposits that may clog the generator's fuel system. Additionally, propane can be stored and used safely in buildings and last longer than gas-powered units. Converting to propane is fairly easy to do and inexpensive.

Converting to a propane generator is eco-friendly and saves money.
  1. Disconnect the air cleaner cover and remove the assembly nuts with the socket wrench. Pull the assembly off the generator. This will be needed later, so do not dispose of it or store the assembly away.

  2. Remove the generator's gasket and twist the extenders included with the kit onto the already existing studs on the carburetor. Place the 3-hole punch over the stud holes in the gasket and punch new holes over them to increase their size. This allows for the new stud extenders to fit correctly. Reconnect the gasket back onto the generator with the socket wrench.

  3. Attach the hose connector and the hose to the adapter with your hand. Find the 90-degree hose connector and place it on the side of the adapter. Make sure the hose is tightly inserted so gas does not leak out. Place a clap over the free end of the gas hose and press it into the hose coming out of the adapter. Tighten the clamp with the screwdriver to make sure it is snug and that no gas will leak out.

  4. Move the adapter over the stud extenders that were installed up against the carburetor rim. The gasket that was included with the kit should slide right over the extenders and onto the adapter. Bolt the constructed air cleaner assembly back on with the socket wrench and reattach the cover to the air cleaner with the screwdriver.

  5. Turn the reducer and loading block until inserted tightly into the outlet slot coming from the fuel controlling area of the generator pump. Place another hose clamp over the free end of the outlet hose and press it onto the hose threads. Tighten with a screwdriver to ensure a secure fit. Connect the high-pressure hose connector to the fuel control slot and bolt the fuel control to the frame with the socket wrench. Crank the engine to ensure everything is working smoothly.
