How Do I Prime a Campbell Hausfeld Airless Paint Sprayer?

Campbell Hausfeld airless paint sprayers operate on a High Volume Low Pressure (HVLP) system to paint large areas with low air pressure. The turbine in the system includes a mini compressor to provide 5 to 10 psi of pressure in painting for low-pressure applications. Spray guns need priming before the paint can travel from the pressure pot through the air hose into the gun and out the tip. Priming a spray gun ensures an even flow of paint for an even paint job.

Step 1

Grasp the brass quick connect coupler on the turbine. Pull the fitting back with one hand.

Step 2

Insert the air hose male connector into the quick connect coupler with the other hand. Release the quick connect fitting to attach the air hose to the turbine.

Step 3

Plug the electrical cord into an electrical outlet or an extension cord.

Step 4

Grasp the quick connect coupler on the loose end of the air hose. Pull it back.

Step 5

Insert the spray gun male connector into the coupler. Release the coupler to attach the spray gun to the air hose.

Step 6

Attach the air compressor hose to the bottom of the pressure pot in the same manner.

Step 7

Unscrew the four wing nuts on top of the pressure pot in a counterclockwise direction. Lift the pressure pot lid straight off.

Step 8

Fill the pressure pot with mixed paint for application.

Step 9

Place the lid on the pressure pot and tighten the four wing nuts in a clockwise direction.

Step 10

Turn the compressor to the on (-) position. The compressor switch is on top of the compressor at the back of the cart.

Step 11

Squeeze the spray gun trigger. Hold it against the gun handle to prime the spray gun. The paint will travel from the pressure pot through the air hose and into the spray gun to load the gun without additional air for painting. Let the paint trickle out in a solid stream from the spray gun tip.


  • Work in a well-ventilated area to keep the paint fumes from filling the room. Open windows or use a fan for air circulation. Adequate ventilation also allows proper function of the airless sprayer.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s guidelines on reducing the paint to the correct viscosity to allow the paint to flow evenly without stopping up the spray gun tip.
