How to Make a Satellite Dish Cover

Marshal M. Rosenthal

A satellite dish is responsible for reflecting the transmission from an overhead satellite onto a LNB (low noise block amplifier) which then modifies the signal so it can be viewed on a TV. You can protect the satellite dish when it is not going to be used for a length of time, such as leaving on a vacation, by placing a protective cover on it. To make a satellite dish cover, acquire a few tools and supplies from a crafts store. No electrical skills are required and the cover will not damage the dish in any way.

  1. Measure the width and length of the satellite dish with a tape measure. Write the measurements down on a piece of paper.

  2. Place the burlap on a work surface. Cut out a rectangle that is 5 inches longer on all sides than the measurements with the work scissors. Dispose of the excess burlap in the trash.

  3. Remove the protective backing from the rough-sided Velcro pads. Place the sticky side of the Velcro pad against each of the four corners of the burlap.

  4. Measure the width of the burlap from the top left corner to the top right. Place the sticky side of a Velcro pad at the halfway mark on the top edge of the burlap. Repeat this procedure with another Velcro pad and the bottom edge of the burlap.

  5. Measure across the back of the satellite dish from the upper left corner to the right. Make a dot with the pencil on the halfway mark. Repeat this procedure, only from the lower left corner of the dish.

  6. Measure down the length of the satellite dish from the upper left corner. Make a dot on the back at the halfway mark. Repeat this procedure, only from the upper right corner of the dish.

  7. Remove the protective backing from the smooth-side Velcro pads. Place the sticky side of a Velcro pad against each of the four back corners of the satellite. Place the sticky side of a Velcro pad against each of the pencil marks. Let the adhesive on the pads set for a day before proceeding.

  8. Hold the burlap with the Velcro pads on the back side. Place your satellite dish cover against the dish. Fold the ends of the cover over the dish and up against the Velcro pads on the back. Push the two sets of Velcro pads together so that they adhere to each other.
