Homemade Cleaning Formulas

Homemade cleaning solutions are cheaper and friendlier for the environment than store-bought products containing toxic chemicals.

Vinegar and baking soda are both nontoxic, natural cleaning products that also possess deodorizing qualities. Homemade cleaning solutions are inexpensive and easily mixed in a short time. You can make solutions for almost all cleaning tasks around the home, from window washing to carpet cleaners. Always reuse spray bottles in which you can mix and store the cleaning solution.

Mix 1 tbsp. baking soda, 3 tbsp. white vinegar and 2 cups water in an empty, clean spray bottle. The mixture serves as a tough stain remover for carpets and fabrics.

Mix 3 tbsp. white vinegar with 24 oz. warm water in a spray bottle. The solution serves as a homemade window washer.

Mix 1/2 cup baking soda with 1/2 cup white vinegar for a homemade drain cleaning solution. The formula will also clear blocked drains and deodorize the plumbing pipes.

Cut a lemon in half and sprinkle baking soda on the exposed side. Scrub dirty pots and pans with the lemon for a homemade dish cleaner.

Mix 10 drops essential oil with 2 cups baking soda in a mixing jug. Sprinkle the baking soda on your carpet and let stand for 1 hour. Vacuum the baking soda and essential oil mixture. Baking soda will clean and refresh your carpet.

Tip

  • Keep an extra box of baking soda in the cupboard to use for cleaning.

Warning

  • Never mix vinegar with any product containing bleach. The combination produces toxic fumes.
