Things You Will Need

  • Epoxy repair kit
  • Tub repair tape
  • 400 grit sandpaper
  • Drill

Repairing your own tub will end up saving you a lot of time and money.

Epoxy

  1. Sand the area surrounding the crack with 400 grit sandpaper. Sand about a half-inch around each side of the crack. This will help the epoxy seal more securely. Drill 1/8-inch holes at each end of the crack to prevent it from spreading further.

  2. Wash the cracked area with soap and warm water. Let the area dry. If you are in a hurry you can blow-dry it with a hair dryer.

  3. Mix the epoxy solution. Every epoxy kit has slightly different directions for this, so follow your directions closely.

  4. Apply the epoxy to the crack and holes using the applicator provided in the kit. Make sure the crack, holes and the sanded area are completely covered. Smooth the epoxy out and scrape up any excess with the applicator.

  5. Let the epoxy dry. It is generally recommended that it sit for at least 12 hours before it comes in contact with water.

Repair Tape

  1. Drill 1/4-inch holes at each end of the crack to prevent it from spreading. Lightly sand the area with the sandpaper.

  2. Wash the area with soap and water to remove any type of residue. Dry the area with a hair dryer or let it air dry.

  3. Cut a piece of tape that will extend at least one inch past each end of the crack. Trim the ends so they are rounded.

  4. Remove the liner on the adhesive side of the tape. Carefully cover the crack with the tape and make sure to remove any air bubbles.

  5. Let the tape sit for three hours before letting it come in contact with water.

Tips

The epoxy works best when used on cracks less than 1 inch long. Use the tape for cracks 1 inch or longer.

Warnings

Epoxy is hazardous. Make sure the area is well ventilated before using it. Do not let it get on your skin.
