Do it Yourself Asphalt Curbing
Asphalt curbs are created with a large machine that compresses hot asphalt into the bump-shaped curb that lines a parking lot. Installing an asphalt curb at home is a something of a challenge, however, it is possible. The asphalt is simply hand-shoveled and then pressed into shape by hand.
The advantage is the process allows more freedom in where the curb is installed and how it is shaped.
Things You Will Need
- Asphalt
- Wheelbarrow
- Shovel
- Tamping tool
-
Determine where you want to install the asphalt curb and mark both ends of the curb installation area with red spray paint.
-
Hand-shovel the hot asphalt onto your driveway along the marked area forming a line of hot asphalt that is 8-inches wide and 6-inches tall. (The curb is just a few inches taller than the curb's desired final height.)
-
Pack down the top of the curb with the flat tamper tool by leaning down on the tamping tool with your weight.
-
Angle the tamper tool at 45 degrees and place it on the side of the curb. Press down on the tool, compressing the side of the asphalt. Repeat this step on the other side of the curb.
-
Repeat steps 3 and 4 along the entire length of the asphalt to form your curb.
Tip
Only deposit as much hot asphalt as you will be able to compact in 15 minutes, when first laying your asphalt. Otherwise, the asphalt will cool down and you will not be able to compact it.
