How to Glue Fiberglass to Wood
Epoxy will glue almost any materials together and is the adhesive of choice when gluing fiberglass to wood. Epoxy has the advantage of spreading across the two surfaces and filling in gaps that are visible between the fiberglass and wood. Always mix the epoxy resin and hardener in the correct proportions.

Things You Will Need
- Mask
- Fiberglass mat
- Scissors
- Gloves
- Polyester compound
- Plastic container
- Hardener
- Stick
- Solvent-resistant paintbrushes
- 60-grit sandpaper
- Clean damp cloth
- Epoxy top coat
-
Position the mask with carbon filter over your nose.
-
Place the wooden item on a clean and dust-free work area. Ensure that the room is well ventilated, as the polyester gives off toxic styrene gas during hardening.
-
Cut the fiberglass mat into pieces.
-
Pull the gloves on. Pour 1/2 gallon polyester into a plastic container and add the hardener in a mixing ratio of 1 part hardener to 100 parts polyester. Mix with a stick.
-
Paint the polyester onto the surface of the wood. Place the first piece of fiberglass onto the wet polyester surface and paint another layer of polyester over this. Push down gently onto the fiberglass matting with the brush to expel any air bubbles.
-
Lay down a second sheet of polyester and paint another layer of polyester over this. Push down gently onto the fiberglass matting with the brush to expel any air bubbles.
-
Lay down a third sheet of polyester and paint another layer of polyester over this. Push down gently onto the fiberglass matting with the brush to expel any air bubbles.
-
Leave the object to dry for two days.
-
Sand the object using 60-grit sandpaper. Wipe the wooden object down with a clean moist cloth.
-
Paint the entire wooden object with an epoxy top coat. Allow the first layer to dry for four hours and apply a second. Allow the wooden object to dry for two days.
