How to Remove Carrot Stains From Plastic

Heather Vecchioni

Although carrots are healthy and tasty, they come with a downfall — they tend to stain plastic. Carrots, like other vegetables, contain natural dyes that discolor certain material, including plastic. Since plastic is so porous, it accepts the dyes easily, showing the evidence of your carrot consumption.

The natural oils found in carrots can stain plastic dishes.

If you don’t want to see that constant orange reminder, you can remove the staining from your plastic dishes with materials you likely already have around your home.

  1. Pour about 1 oz. of vegetable oil into a small container. Dip a paper towel or cotton ball into the oil until it is soaked. Scrub the stain with the paper towel or cotton ball until it disappears. Once the stain is gone, wash the dish in soap and water to remove the oil.

  2. Pour water and degreasing dishwashing soap over the stain. Use a wet sponge or scrub brush to work the soap into the stain until it is gone. Rinse the excess soap off of the dish. The degreasing properties of the soap will likely cut through the carrot’s natural oils, causing the stain to disappear.

  3. Pour about 1 oz. of isopropyl alcohol into a small dish. Dip a cotton ball into the liquid until it has absorbed some of the alcohol. Place the cotton ball on the stain and rub it back and forth, working the alcohol into the discolored plastic. Scrub the stain until it is gone and then wash the dish with soap and water to remove any of the alcohol residue.
