How to Remove Rust From Buckles

Julie Christensen

Buckles on straps, belts, overalls or boots may rust over time as their protective coating wears down and they are exposed to moisture and air. Commercial rust removers are effective for removing rust, but may be corrosive and toxic. Before resorting to these products try a few homemade remedies for removing rust.

Dry buckles off after exposure to moisture.

Protect leather or fabrics by covering them with a paper towel before you begin.

Tip

Read and follow the manufacturer's label when using commercial rust removers. Ensure that the product is safe for fabrics or leather. Apply a thin coating of paste wax containing carnuba to prevent rust from returning, according to Michigan State University Extension.

  1. Rub the rust stains gently with a piece of extra fine steel wool. Wipe away any debris with a damp paper towel and dry with a clean cloth.

  2. Sprinkle 1 tbsp. salt on the rust stain and pour enough lemon juice over it to wet it. Wait five minutes.

  3. Rub the stain with a paper towel or the steel wool. Wipe clean with a damp cloth and dry.
