Ratings and Problems
The heavier the architectural shingles are, the higher their ratings are for weather and fire resistance. Architectural shingles are built to withstand winds up to 120 mph, and heavy granulated top coats make them highly fire resistant. A common problem of architectural shingles is algae and mildew buildup, which can cause damage to the roofing product. Areas that receive larger volume of rain can prevent mildew damage by using shingles with some copper included in the material compound.
