A chlorinator usually produces chlorine from salt, which consists of sodium and chlorine atoms. This type of chlorinator generates an electrical current in a salt solution. The energy from the electricity splits the sodium and chlorine atoms apart, which liberates chlorine. The chlorine combines with water to make hypochlorous acid, a disinfectant. A chlorinator can save you money in the long run because salt is significantly cheaper than chlorine.
Make a pair of holes in the PVC pipe with the drill. The holes should be about 1 inch apart, and large enough to hold the metal rods.
Strip a half inch of insulation from the ends of the black wire and red wire. Connect the end of the red wire to one of the metal bars and secure it with electrical tape. Fasten one end of the black wire to the other metal bar in the same manner.
Place a metal rod into each of the holes in the PVC pipe. Cover the holes with caulk to make a watertight seal. Fasten this PVC pipe to the output pipe for your pool. Caulk the seal to make it watertight.
Multiply the number of gallons of water in your swimming pool by 0.025. Add this number of pounds of salt to your pool and run your pool pump for a full day. This will give your pool a salt concentration of 4,000 parts per million, or PPM.
Connect the free end of the black wire to the negative terminal of a 12-volt power source, typically a generator. Connect the free of the red wired to the positive terminal of the generator. Run your generator until you obtain a chlorine concentration of about 3 PPM. This typically requires about a day.
