How to Remove the Tub From a GE Profile Washing Machine

Cecilia Harsch

There are several reasons you may need to remove the tub from a GE Profile washing machine. These reasons include clothing stuck between the inner and outer washtubs, accessing the motor or the pump pulley, changing the spin bearings or basket drive, replacing the agitating clutch or replacing a leaking washtub. Disassembling a GE Profile washing machine can be challenging, but it's a necessary step to take when making repairs to your washer.

Front Load

Step 1

Disconnect the GE Profile front-load washing machine from the electrical outlet. Pull the machine from the wall to gain access to the rear of the washer.

Step 2

Remove the Phillips head screws along the rear lip at the top of the machine. Lift the top washer panel and pull it toward you to remove.

Step 3

Pull the detergent drawer open. Press the tab located on the back of the detergent drawer to remove the drawer from the Profile washer.

Step 4

Remove the single Phillips head screw from the left corner of the detergent opening. Remove the Phillips head screws from the back of the control panel. Tilt the control panel off the Profile washer, letting it rest on the top of the machine.

Step 5

Remove the screws holding the door lock in place. Grab the wire retainer ring around the door gasket with needle-nose pliers. Carefully remove the ring from the gasket.

Step 6

Push the gasket away from the edge of the Profile washer opening to access the locking mechanism. Push the mechanism from the door. Peel the remainder of the gasket off the door opening.

Step 7

Take out the screws located along the front bottom of the Profile washer. Pop the bottom panel from the machine.

Step 8

Take out the four screws at each corner holding the front door panel to the Profile washer. Lift the front door panel off the machine.

Step 9

Remove the top and bottom weights from the front of the machine with a 13mm socket and socket wrench.

Step 10

Remove the Phillips screws holding the panel to the rear of the Profile washer. Pull the panel from the washer and set it aside. Attach a 21mm socket to the socket wrench. Remove the nut holding the pulley and the belt to the rear of the washtub.

Step 11

Disconnect the pressure tube, vent hose and outlet hose from the rear of the washtub by removing the screws holding them to the tub.

Step 12

Turn the four shock absorbers along the bottom of the tub 90 degrees. This releases the shocks from the tub and allows you to lift the Profile front-load tub from the machine.

Top Load

Step 1

Disconnect the GE Profile top-load washing machine from the electrical outlet. Pull the machine out from the wall.

Step 2

Insert a slotted-head screwdriver into the side seams at the bottom of the washing machine cabinet. Release the front panel of the Profile washing machine by slightly twisting the screwdriver. Lift the GE Profile’s front panel up and away from the Profile machine.

Step 3

Look in the top front right and left corners inside the cabinet to locate the two screws holding the top onto the GE profile washer. Remove the two screws from the washing machine cabinet.

Step 4

Lift the top of the Profile washing machine from the cabinet and let it rest against the wall behind the washer.

Step 5

Pop the agitator cap from the agitator inside the washtub. Attach a 7/16-inch socket to a socket wrench and remove the bolt holding the agitator in the tub. Lift the agitator from the tub, exposing the driveshaft.

Step 6

Thread a spanner wrench over the driveshaft and onto the tub nut. Tap the wrench with a hammer to loosen the nut, turning it counterclockwise to remove.

Step 7

Unsnap the tabs attached to the tub ring from the top of the exterior washtub. Take the tub ring off the tub and lift the inner washtub from the Profile washer. Tap the drive block up and off the driveshaft with a hammer.

Step 8

Unhook the three suspension springs off the suspension spring mounting brackets at the bottom of the exterior tub. Remove the screws from the suspension spring mounting brackets to remove them from the exterior tub.

Step 9

Pull the exterior washtub from the GE Profile washing machine.
