How to Replace Self Closing Door Hinge

Self-closing hinges help keep doors shut, making it easy to ensure that animals or children do not get into areas where they do not belong. However, if the hinges on these doors are not maintained, they can become corroded. If your self-closing door hinges no longer function properly, replace them.

  1. Open the door as far as you can. If there is furniture in the way, move it so the door opens all the way to the wall if possible.

  2. Unscrew the screws holding the top hinge from the door, then the screws holding the hinge to the door frame. Remove the hinge and set it aside.

  3. Position one self-closing hinge in the same orientation as the old top hinge on the door. Screw the new hinge to the door using the included screws.

  4. Attach the other side of the hinge to the door frame using the included screws.

  5. Repeat Steps 2 through 4 on the bottom hinge on the door.

Warning

  • Do not replace the door's middle hinge with a self-closing hinge. The load from a typical door with three hinges does not require a self-closing hinge in the middle position.
