Homemade Carpet Cleaner Liquid

Commercial carpet cleaning liquid can contain chemicals that you may not want in your home. A simple alternative is to make your own carpet cleaning liquid. The solutions are easy to create, and you can make an all-purpose soapy cleaner or a vinegar-based spot cleaner. Both types work on any carpet fiber and rinse out easily when you blot them up with clear water.

General Purpose Carpet Cleaner

Water and vinegar removes most carpet stains.
  1. Fill one spray bottle with 1 cup of warm water.

  2. Add 1/4 tsp. of liquid dish soap, if your carpet is synthetic. Add 1 tsp. of liquid dish soap if your carpet has natural fibers.

  3. Screw on the lid of the spray bottle and shake it to incorporate the ingredients.

  4. Spray the liquid over the carpeted area you want to clean until all the fibers are damp.

  5. Blot the sprayed areas with a clean, white cloth to work the cleaner into the fibers. Rinse the cloth with clean water and blot again to rinse the soapy residue out of the carpet. Let the carpet air dry.

Spot Treatment for Stains

  1. Fill a second spray bottle with 1 cup of lukewarm water and 1 cup of household white vinegar.

  2. Put on the lid of the bottle and shake it to incorporate the ingredients.

  3. Spray any stains with the liquid cleaner until the fibers are damp. Let the cleaner sit for five minutes.

  4. Scrub the stain gently with a damp, soft sponge to soak up the stain.
