How to Use Metal Wall Anchors
Wall anchors are used if you wish to hang a heavy picture or shelf on the wall and no wall stud is available. Plastic wall anchors are fine if the item you are hanging is light. However, for heavier items you will need to use a metal wall anchor, or toggle bolt. Toggle bolts come in two pieces. One piece is inserted into the wall and a pair of metal wings secure it in place. The other piece is the screw you will hang the item from.
Use a screwdriver to unscrew the screw from the metal wings and set it aside.
Place the tip of the metal wings on the wall, in the location you will be hanging the item. Hammer the toggle bolt partway into the wall. Insert a screwdriver into the toggle bolt and turn it to screw the toggle bolt the rest of the way into the wall.
Insert the screw into the hole in the center of the wings. If you are hanging a shelf, put the screw through the shelf first and then place it into the wings.
Tighten the screw with a screwdriver. As you tighten the screw, the wings will expand and secure the toggle bolt in place.
Things You Will Need
- Drill a pilot hole the diameter of the toggle bolt through the drywall to lessen the risk of the drywall cracking during installation.
