What Do I Use to Clean My Granite Countertops?

Specialty Cleaner

Unlike other types of materials, granite countertops don't have a special type of seal over top of the main stone which prevents liquid from being absorbed, as well as stains from setting in. You can clean your granite countertops with one of a few different products. .

Different companies make specialty cleaning solutions designed specifically for stone counters like those made of marble or granite. The solution contains neutral ingredients that will not stain or absorb into the counter during use. You can spray the cleaning solution directly onto your granite countertop. These cleaners are available at most stores and clearly say that they are compatible with stone like granite and marble on the bottle.

Rag or Cloth

Use any type of soft rag, cloth, or even paper towel that's both clean and dry to clean your granite countertop. "Soft" is the key word. Don't use any other type of object like steel wool to attempt to clean your granite countertop. Doing so could scratch the surface of the counter and leave dents or scratch marks. Any type of cloth or material that has the ability to absorb the type of cleaning solution you're working with will do.

Stain Remover

Use common household items to remove stains from your granite countertops. By mixing together dishwasher liquid, flour, and water in a cup or bowl, you can create a paste to spread over the area of your granite countertop where a stain is present. The solution will absorb the stain from the stone. Once absorbed, you can then wipe the solution up with a clean soft cloth or paper towel.

Sealing Granite Countertops

Sealing a granite countertop is something that you can do cheaply that allows you to clean the counter with a wider variety of products in the future. Certain companies make solutions that can be sprayed from a bottle directly onto the counter. Once the entire surface of the granite counter is covered with the sealer, the solution will dry. You can then clean the granite countertop with regular water or cleaning solutions and a clean, dry rag in the future.
