Solid surface countertops, like those made by DuPont, Wilsonart and Avonite, are made of acrylic, polyester or a combination of these two materials, according to “PopularMechanics.” They resist scratches and stains and are easy to keep clean and hygienic. Deep scratches and stains can be sanded out by professional solid surface contractors. These technicians can also fill in gouges and other unsightly marks in the surface.
Care
DuPont advises a number of precautions to keep Corian countertops looking their best. Use simple soapy water or ammonia-based detergent for removing everyday dirt and grease from the counter. Specially formulated solid surface cleaners are also available. These help to remove hard water spots and other stains from the Corian. DuPont says to avoid the use of window cleaners, which can leave a dull film on the surface, and to wipe the Corian dry to avoid dullness left by drying water. Disinfect the countertop with a solution of 1 part water to 1 part bleach and then wipe thoroughly. Always use a cutting board to avoid leaving cutting marks in the Corian.
Preventing Heat Damage
DuPont markets Corian countertops as being heat-resistant and says the material can remain undamaged with temperatures as high as 212 degrees Fahrenheit. However, the maker also warns that Corian cannot withstand prolonged contact with hot surfaces or flames, which can cause burn marks on the surface. Always use a hot pad when placing hot pots and pans on the countertop. Place a trivet under other heat-generating sources, such as toaster ovens.
Repairing Heat Damage on Corian
For slight burn marks, try using a light abrasive cleaner recommended for Corian and a light abrasive scubbing sponge. Do not use harsh abrasives on the countertop. If the heat damage is deep, consult a solid-surface repair contractor or call a Corian countertop dealer for assistance. Repair technicians sand out the damaged area and polish the surface to look like new. Do not use solvents or other harsh compounds to try to remove the heat damage from the Corian surface.
