Vinegar and Water
Vinegar and water is a simple, inexpensive combination that cleans and kills bacteria without leaving a greasy residue. Fill a bucket with one gallon of lukewarm water, and pour in one cup of white vinegar. Do not pour this solution directly onto the wood floors, as it will create too much moisture at once, which could cause floor damage. Instead, dip your sponge or mop into the solution, ring out thoroughly, then clean the floor surface. This will quickly and effectively clean wood floors without leaving water damage. Use daily as a disinfectant and cleaner.
Dish Detergent Solution
Dish detergent works perfect for wood floors, and it breaks up dirt and grime effectively without leaving a greasy residue. Pour one gallon of lukewarm water into a bucket, add four drops of liquid dish detergent (a little goes a long way), and add in 1/2 cup of white vinegar. Again, dip your sponge or mop into the solution, ring out, then clean the wood floor. The dish soap removes dirt and grease buildup, while the vinegar disinfects and kills bacteria. Use daily as a wood floor cleaner.
Essential oils also work great for cleaning wood floors, especially when you're looking to make a scented cleaning product. Pour one gallon of lukewarm water into a bucket, then add 1/2 cup of vinegar, and 10 drops of lemon juice. This creates a fantastic lemon-scented floor cleaner that will not only clean and disinfect, but also keep the room smelling great. Alternately, add in a few drops of your favorite essential oil for scent (peppermint, chamomile, etc.) and use daily as a wood floor cleaner.
