How to Get Grease Off Nylon Brushes
Nylon brushes effectively clean many surfaces and are a smart choice for surfaces that are easily scratched. When using a nylon brush to remove grease from a surface, some of the grease can remain on the brush. Unless the grease residue is removed, it will transfer to the next surface cleaned.
Maintaining cleaning tools, such as nylon brushes, is important to ensure they last a long time and clean effectively.
Things You Will Need
- Rubber gloves
- Dishwashing detergent
- Bucket
- 2 cups white vinegar
- 1/2 cup baking soda
- Old towel
Tip
Wash nylon brushes after using them to clean greasy dishes or other oily surfaces to prevent buildup. Substitute a half-and-half solution of ammonia and water for the vinegar and baking soda mixture to remove grease from nylon brushes.

Wet the nylon brush under hot running water. Hot water alone helps to remove some of the grease buildup.

Put rubber gloves on your hands to keep them dry and protect them from the drying effects of dishwashing detergent. Drizzle several drops of dishwashing detergent onto the wet scrub brush. Work the detergent into the scrub brush bristles by brushing it back and forth over the palm of your hand.

Rinse the brush with warm water to wash out the detergent and grease. Apply, rub and rinse the dishwashing detergent two or three more times to remove as much grease as possible.

Tackle any remaining grease in the nylon brush bristles with a vinegar and baking soda mixture. Pour 2 cups undiluted white vinegar into the bucket. Stir in 1/2 cup baking soda. Soak the scrub brush in the solution for several hours to break down the grease and remove greasy odor.

Rinse the nylon brush under hot water. Shake the brush to remove excess moisture. Set the clean brush on a towel with the bristles facing down. Allow the nylon brush to air dry completely.
