How to Install Tile Over a Laminate Backsplash

Stephi Peppers

Tile adds beauty and functionality to your kitchen. With the many options available for tile types and finishes, creating your dream kitchen is easy. For most homeowners, tile is easily installed over existing materials, including laminate.

Tiling over an old laminate backsplash is a great way to add drama and interest to your kitchen with minimal effort and mess.

  1. Prepare the laminate. Thoroughly clean the laminate surface. If necessary, use a degreasing product. Cleaning the laminate is essential to the tile adhering properly.

  2. Roughen the laminate surface. Once the laminate is clean, sand the surface with rough grit sand paper, or use a deglossing product. This will roughen the laminate and allow the tile to adhere to the surface.

  3. Install the tile over the laminate. Starting at either the bottom right or bottom left corner of your backsplash, begin attaching tiles. Apply a liberal amount of silicone to the back of your tile. Place the tile against the laminate, pressing gently. Continue this process, starting from the bottom of the backsplash and working your way up.

  4. Allow the silicon to dry according to the directions on the packaging. For areas where you need a cut tile such as the top of the backsplash or around an electrical outlet, use your scorer or snips to trim the tile into the desired shape.

  5. Apply grout. Mix your grout and apply it with a spackle knife as you would for any tiling project according to the instructions on the packaging. Wipe away any excess with a sponge, and allow the grout to dry.

  6. Maintain your backsplash. Proper maintenance of your tile backsplash will keep it looking its best for years to come. Fill in any loose or missing grout as you see it, and clean your tiles thoroughly. Should you find a loose tile, use a spackle knife to remove it and reapply the silicone and grout.

  7. Tip

Use safety gear such as gloves and protective eyewear.
