Trex and Veranda are two name brands in the newest family of wood composite materials. Though similar in principle to old-school particle board, these composites represent a quantum leap forward in technology and durability.

Both Trex and Veranda have about the same tensile strength: 250 and 262 pounds per square inch, respectively.

Weathering

Untreated Trex acts like a sponge, regularly absorbing and storing water. This will lead to persistent black mold, cracking and failure over time. Veranda is known to be less prone to water intrusion and the associated problems.

Maintenance

Trex boards must be replaced if damage occurs, whereas Veranda decking can often be repaired.

Treating

After immersion treatment with a water sealant, both Veranda and Trex will weather very well compared to untreated wood.

Heat Damage

Use wood instead of either Trex or Veranda in areas with a lot of direct sunlight. Composites can soften and sag under their own weight when repeatedly exposed to heat.
