How to Clean Burnt Pots and Pans

It doesn't happen often, but if you ever forget you've got something cooking, you might end up with a charred mess. Looking at it, you might think there's no way it can be saved. But don't throw that poor pan away. And don't scrub at it for hours, either.

Don't throw your favorite old pan away -- you can get it clean.

Learn how to remove the burnt gunk and restore the pan to a useful condition.

  1. First, clean as much as you can with dishwashing liquid and hot water.

  2. Cover the bottom with baking soda.

  3. Pour in 1 cup of water and 2 tsp. white vinegar.

  4. Bring to a boil and allow to boil for 3 to 5 minutes. Most of the burnt bit will lift off the bottom.

  5. Drain the pot/pan and scrub again with dishwashing liquid.

  6. If there are still a few stubborn burnt areas, pour a bit of ammonia on the burnt areas and seal the pot in a plastic bag for about 1 hours. Keep it outside so that the fumes don't affect you.

  7. While still outside, remove the pot from the plastic bag. Bring indoor and scrub clean with dishwashing liquid.

  8. Or, cover the burnt bottom of the pan with a paste made of baking soda, dishwashing liquid and white vinegar. Let it sit overnight, and scrub clean in the morning with hot soapy water.
