How to Remove Tarnish From Aluminum Pots

Christina Sloane

Aluminum pots make effective cookware due to their ability to evenly conduct heat. Unfortunately, neglected aluminum pots may develop tarnish due to moisture or oxidation. Hot water from the dishwasher and minerals in detergents may also lead to discoloration.

Hot water causes aluminum cookware to tarnish.

Tarnish is not only unattractive, but also affects the flavor of foods cooked in the pots. You can remove tarnish with a few common kitchen items.

  1. Combine 2 tablespoons of cream of tarter with 1 quart of water or combine 2 tablespoons of white vinegar and a sliced lemon with 1 quart of water. For pots larger than 1 quart, make enough liquid to cover the tarnished portion, but preserve the ingredients ratio.

  2. Pour the mixture into the aluminum pot.

  3. Bring the mixture to a boil over high heat. Allow the mixture to boil for 20 minutes.

  4. Rinse the pot to remove residue.

  5. Dry thoroughly with a towel.
