How to Caulk Shingles

Shingles play a pivotal role in the protection of a home's roof. They ensure that water properly runs off and does not infiltrate the susceptible wooden surface below. That's why it is imperative to properly install shingles on your roof using a suitable caulking agent. Shingles that are improperly installed can lead to water damage and potential harm to the structural integrity of the house. Learn to apply caulk properly and keep your home protected from the elements.

Caulk shingles easily
  1. Lift the shingles gently to apply the caulk. You can use the backside of a hammer to help you lift the shingles if they are particularly stubborn.

  2. Apply caulk underneath the shingles. Use a caulking gun to apply a small bead of roofing sealant under each shingle. Gently pull the trigger on the caulking gun to release a bead of caulk. The caulk is best placed under the corner edge of the shingles to prevent curling.

  3. Press the shingles down onto the caulk. Use a standard brick to hold down the shingles and help bond the caulk and the shingles together. Allow the brick to weigh down the shingles for at least 24 hours.
