Painting Cabinets With a Laminate Paper
After several years your kitchen looks outdated. You can spruce it by making major changes in the appearance of your kitchen. Change the look of the cabinets and you change the look of your entire kitchen. Painting your laminate-paper-covered cabinets is one inexpensive way to get a make over. Repaint your kitchen cabinets to a completely different color and enjoy your almost brand-new room.
-
Remove the cabinet doors and paint them separately from the actual cabinets. Use a screwdriver to remove all the hardware. Put all hardware in a plastic bag to save for later.
-
Peel off any of the laminate paper that may be loose.
-
Fill a bucket with hot water and add a few drops of dish soap. Scrub the cabinets really well, making sure to remove all the dirt and especially grease, as grease will prevent the paint from adhering to the cabinets. Allow the cabinets to dry thoroughly before painting.
-
Sand the cabinets lightly to rough up the surface before painting and help the primer and paint adhere a little better.
-
Use an oil-based primer and a paintbrush to completely cover the cabinets. Use two coats of the primer if necessary. Allow the primer to dry completely, according to the manufacturer's directions, before applying the next coat.
-
Paint the cabinets and the doors with an oil-based paint. Make sure to cover all the areas of the cabinets and the doors completely. Paint only the front and sides of the doors and the front of the cabinets.
-
Add a second coat of paint, if desired, and allow it to dry for at least two days before hanging the doors back up.

Tips
- Use an oil-based paint for painting your kitchen cabinets since it will hold up better to washing than water-based paint.
- Remember that oil-based paints take much longer to dry than water-based paints. Do not try to hurry the process by starting the next coat of paint or primer if the previous coat is still wet. Allow yourself several days to complete this project. Plan to work on warm, sunny days as opposed to rainy days. Humid air will make the paint take even longer to dry completely.
- If you do want to paint the backs of the doors and the insides of the cabinets, choose a contrasting paint to really change the look of your kitchen.
