Caulk for Extreme Temperatures

Caulk is a substance used to provide insulation, as well as seal cracks and crevices around doors and windows. Most caulks will perform well in warm climates but cold weather causes some to stiffen and turn hard.

Neutral Silicone

The preferred caulk for cold climates is neutral cure silicone caulking.  It will bond well with metal, glass and tile and is resistant to cold weather.

According to the University of Alaska, experienced contractors prefer neutral cure silicone caulk for cold weather applications. 


Synthetic Rubber

Synthetic rubber caulk is a good choice for materials which can shift or expand and contract with temperature changes.  It works well on porous materials such as wood and can be painted with water based paints.


High Temperature Silicone

Caulk used in pipes, flues and heating ducts must be resistant to high temperatures.  RTV acetoxyl silicone caulking is used in both commercial and residential high temperature applications.

This type of acid cure silicone caulking can withstand temperatures of up to 600 degrees Fahrenheit.
