How to Treat a Wooden Dining Room Table to Prevent Water Stains

Wooden furniture is durable and beautiful. It's especially prized in dining room furniture, which many families have for decades. That's why a water stain on a treasured table can be distressing. Protect your table by treating the wood with a homemade water-resistant polish.

Dining room tables are susceptible to water stains.
  1. Clean the table by going over it with water and mild detergent, using a damp sponge. Wring the sponge out before using it on the table to avoid getting the table too wet. Rinse the sponge, wring it out, and go over the table again to remove soap residue. Dry the table with a towel to remove moisture.

  2. Mix one part lemon oil with three parts olive oil. Oil repels water, and this will create a natural wood polish that keeps the wood looking like new while also protecting it.

  3. Moisten a cloth pad with the oil mixture, and spread it across the dining room table. Liberally apply the oil to the entire table, including the legs, to give the table an even finish. Do this once a week for best results.

  4. Wipe up any water or other liquid as soon as you see it on the table. The oil will protect the wood, but the sooner the water is removed, the less likely it is to cause damage.
