How to Fix Wobbly Headboards

1. Remove the mattress and box spring from the bed in order to gain full access to the headboard and headboard connectors.

2. Locate the screws or bolts connecting the frame of the bed to the headboard. You’ll find that there are typically two connectors per frame side extending through the mounting hole of the frame through a frame mounting plate and into the headboard body, one on top of the frame mounting plate and one at the bottom of the plate.

3. Tighten the mounting screws or bolts onto the headboard to fix the wobble, using either the screwdriver or the wrench. Begin with the top connectors on both sides, and then tighten the bottom ones until the frame lies flush against the headboard.

4. Test the connection by moving the headboard back and forth against the frame. There should be little or no movement, with the frame moving along with the headboard rather than the headboard wobbling in place. If you detect any movement, then remove the connectors and wrap sealant tape around the threads to add more traction to the connectors. Add an additional washer to the head of the connector. Reinsert them onto place, making sure that the connectors go into the mounting holes of the headboard straight, parallel with the ground and that they are tightened enough to hold the frame steady without cracking the headboard.

5. Drill additional holes in your headboard about 1/4-inch from the original holes if the tape does not provide the fit needed. Use a bit that’s the same size as the anchor bolts you’re using to hold the frame in place, and drill the holes to the same depth as your bolts. Screw the bolts into place, through the mounting plate holes and into the newly drilled holes, until the heads of the bolts lie flush with the frame.
