How to Replace a Lid Switch on Maytag Washer

One of the most common problems with a Maytag washing machine is a malfunctioning lid switch, the most common problem on all washing machines. The lid switch interrupts the operation of the machine when it is open and allows normal operations when it is closed. Over time and with use, the switch can wear out. Even a novice can replace the lid switch on a Maytag washer in about half an hour.

1. Unplug the Maytag washer's electrical cord from the wall outlet.

2. Unscrew the screws on the sides of the control panel. Slide a putty knife under the control panel on each side to release the spring clips. Flip the control panel up and out of the way.

3. Unfasten the screws on either side of the top of the cabinet with a 5/16-inch nut driver. Check the bottom front panel for screws. Some Maytag models may have screws in this location and others will not. If there are screws, remove them with a Phillips screwdriver.

4. Grasp the front of the washer opening with one hand and the back of the cabinet with the other and pull the cabinet forward about 6 inches. You should see the lid switch and have access to it.

5. Disconnect the wiring harness from the lid switch by puling it out by hand. Use a Philips screwdriver to remove the two screws that secure the switch to the washer.

6. Snap the wiring harness into the new lid switch and secure it in place with the two screws. Reassemble the cabinet by reversing the steps you used to disassemble it. Plug the electrical cord back into the outlet.
