How to Build a Faux Brick Wall Over Cinder Block

Add the appearance of brick to a cinder block wall.

These panels are available from many building supply companies, as well as online. They are designed to fit together like a puzzle, making the seams disappear into a solid brick finish.

1. Measure the height and width of the wall, and then multiply these numbers together to obtain the square footage. This will help you determine how many panels to purchase. Add 10 percent to your total as a safety margin.

2. Brush the cinder block wall with a stiff brush to remove any crusted-on dirt or debris.

3. Wash the wall with soapy water and a scrub brush, then rinse the wall and allow it to dry.

4. Apply a bead of construction adhesive to the back of the first faux brick panel. Apply additional beads every 6 to 8 inches across the length of the panel.

5. Position the first panel in the center of the cinder block wall at ground level.

6. Press the panel hard against the wall, sliding it back and forth a few inches to distribute the glue.

7. Wipe off any excess glue that oozes out, using a paper towel.

8. Apply caulk that matches the faux mortar to the tabs of the panel where the tabs of the second panel will overlap.

9. Apply glue to the second panel and attach it to the wall, sliding its interlocking tabs into those on the first panel the way you would attach the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle.

10. Wipe off any caulk that oozes out, using a paper towel. Pat the remaining caulk with the towel to give it a texture to match that of the faux mortar.

11. Continue gluing and adding panels until the entire wall is covered. Use a saw to cut flat ends on the panels positioned against the ends of the wall.

12. Allow the glue to dry for the time recommended on the tube.
