How to Make Homemade Window Glass Putty
Window glass putty is used in a variety of window pane and frame applications. It can be used like a sealant caulk to repel outside weather, strengthen the pane or keep the glass pane from vibrating due to wind gusts or airplane noise.
You can purchase one of the simplest putties available for both residential and commercial window use at most hardware and home improvement stores, or you can make your own glass putty.
Things You Will Need
- Rubber gloves
- Measuring cup
- Raw linseed oil
- Boiled linseed oil
- Calcium carbonate powder
- Empty paint can or bucket
- Stirrer
- Powdered stove black
- Putty knife
Tip
If you want the putty to appear darker in color, do not add more than 2 to 3 cups of calcium carbonate powder. Instead, add powdered stove black in 1-cup increments and stir until the desired color is reached.

Put on rubber gloves and combine 1/2 cup raw linseed oil with 1/2 cup boiled linseed oil in an empty paint can or bucket.

Stir the combination of raw and boiled linseed oil thoroughly until well mixed. Add calcium carbonate powder to the mixture in 1-cup increments to make the putty light beige in color. Add more cups of calcium carbonate powder to the mixture to make it lighter.

Test for the right consistency by pulling the stirrer out of the can or bucket. If the putty is pancake batter–like, it is the right consistency.

Apply the putty to the window with a putty knife before it dries to strengthen or seal your window.
