Cleaning a braided rug at home between dry cleanings saves both money and time.

Vacuum the rug with the hardwood floor or curtain attachment on the vacuum. Never use the roller brush on braided rugs because it damages the rug.

Spray the rug down with a dry cleaning solvent. Hardware and home improvement stores carry these solvents. Sponge the solvent into the rug. Move with the braids. This technique removes all the dirt trapped deep in the braids.

Clean stains with ammonia or vinegar. If the rug does not have colors that run, use ammonia. Use vinegar on rugs with colors that may run. Spray or dab the stain with the vinegar or ammonia and let it set for at least 10 minutes. Wipe the area with a damp sponge to remove the stain.

Wash or dry clean the rug every once in a while. If the rug is machine washable, clean it in your washing machine in a gentle cycle. If the rug is dry clean only, dry clean the rug once a year or every other year depending on the traffic the rug receives.
