How to Clean a Braided Jute Rug
With so many benefits to jute rugs, such as their eco-friendly stature and inability to ever go out of style while lending their natural good looks to any room in your home, it's easy to dismiss the drawbacks that come with them. Jute rugs require care and upkeep as they can't simply be washed when they become dirty.
If you're willing to take on the cleaning and care for these special rugs, the rewards will come in the form a gorgeous rug that will last for years to come.
Things You Will Need
- Paper towels
- Club soda
- White vinegar
- Clean cloth
- Baking soda
Tip
Rotate the rug every now and then to reverse the flow of traffic. This will help to protect your rug from undue damage.
Warning
Avoid the use of harsh chemicals. It is not safe to steam clean your jute rug as this may cause the rug to pucker. Avoid the use of hot water when cleaning your jute rug. Be careful not to place your rug in an area where it may be subjected to spills or excess moisture such as the bathroom.
-
Clean up spills immediately with a clean cloth or paper towel. Blot the area, being sure not to rub or push so hard that you cause excess moisture to seep deep into the fibers. Apply club soda to a clean cloth and gently blot the rug if the spill looks like it may turn into a stain. Dry the area with a hair dryer on low, or place a fan nearby to help it dry quicker.
-
Vacuum the rug regularly to prevent dirt from lodging deeply within the fibers. Use a dull knife or plastic edge to scrape away any dirt that may have become stuck on the rug, and vacuum it up.
-
Sprinkle baking soda on the rug and allow it to sit overnight to help absorb any lingering odors that may be in the rug. In the morning, vacuum up the baking soda, and flip the rug over to repeat on the other side. Leave the baking soda on the rug for at least 2-3 hours before removing it.
-
Clean up pet accidents immediately. Remove solids with paper towels, and blot up urine quickly. Mix white vinegar and water in equal parts, and dip a clean cloth into it to gently blot the area clean. Cover the area in baking soda to help draw the moisture out of it and also to help eliminate the odor.
