How to Clean Carpets without a Carpet Cleaner

At-home carpet cleaners are helpful, but what if you only need to spot clean or don't need to clean your carpets often? Buying or renting a machine can be expensive. Fortunately, some simple solutions only require cheap ingredients and a little elbow grease.

Keep carpet clean with some simple ingredients.

Warning

Test each method in an inconspicuous area of the carpet.

  1. Mix equal parts of vinegar and water in a spray bottle and spray over the area you need to clean. Allow to sit for 10 minutes and then scrub with a wet towel.

  2. Lightly spray club soda without soaking the carpet. Let it sit for 10 minutes and then blot dry with towels.

  3. Mix equal parts salt, borax and vinegar. Rub the paste into the stain and allow to dry. Once dry, vacuum.

  4. Use water and small amount of dish soap for small spills and stains. Scrub in and rinse with water. Blot dry.

  5. Sprinkle baking soda or cornstarch on the carpet to clean and deodorize without water. Let sit for five minutes and then vacuum.
