How to Clean Stainless Steel With Olive Oil

Stainless steel products are very durable and can last for years, yet they can also be very sensitive when it comes to cleaning them.
If you use a harsh detergent, it can cause spots, and if it is abrasive it can scratch the steel. A great alternative to harsh chemical cleaners is olive oil. Using olive oil on stainless steel will not only help remove any spots and marks you may find, it can also help hide scratches.

Step 1

Clean your stainless steel item with mild dish soap, and rinse well.

Step 2

Dampen the terry cloth and wipe down your stainless steel item. If you look closely at it, you may see a light grain. Wipe the steel in the same direction as the grain.

Step 3

Place a small amount of olive oil on a fresh terry cloth, and rub any stains or prints that you see in a small, circular motion. If you were able to distinguish the grain, then rub along the grain. Continue this process until you have removed the stains.

Step 4

Give your product a final shine by adding more olive oil to the cloth, and rubbing down your entire stainless steel item. You will not need a lot of oil, as it will smoothly spread over the stainless steel.

Things You Will Need

  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • Soft terry cloth

Tip

  • If you need extra help for stubborn spots, try a little baking soda and water, and then do a final shine with olive oil.

Warning

  • Do not use a rough cloth when cleaning your stainless steel, as this can cause scratches just as easily as an abrasive cleaner can.
