How to Start Kitchen Remodeling

Put serious thought into your kitchen remodel before you remodel it.

Planning your kitchen remodel ensures you don't forget an important phase of the remodel.
Remodeling a kitchen can be expensive, but it increases the value of your home. Kitchens come in many styles, shapes and colors. Take your specific kitchen shape into account when deciding what to incorporate into your kitchen remodel. Storage, food preparation and clean up must be considered when remodeling your kitchen, as these are the basic functions of a kitchen. You do not have to move appliances when remodeling, unless of course you wish to do so. .

Create a budget for your kitchen remodel. Choose items for your kitchen within your budget. This prevents you from possibly going into debt remodeling your kitchen.

Look through magazines and select kitchen designs you want to create in your kitchen. Cut out the photographs of the kitchen with your scissors and insert in a photo-journal book.

Use the kitchen photos you cut out of the magazines and create a list of items you wish to incorporate into your kitchen remodel by writing them down on a piece of paper with pencil.

Measure the space you have for your appliances--stove, refrigerator and dishwasher--and transfer this measurement to your list. This allows you to purchase appliances to fit in the space you have available in your kitchen, preventing possibly serious construction work to your kitchen.

Select the material for your walls. Purchase small tiles or bring home paint swatches and place them in your kitchen. This allows you to visually see how your selection looks in your kitchen before you install tile or paint it. Light colors create an illusion of a larger room, while dark colors create an illusion of a smaller, more intimate space.

Select the cabinets. Cabinets come in a variety of styles, sizes and materials, such as oak or glass. Take your budget into consideration when selecting cabinets, as custom-made cabinets are more expensive than premade cabinets.

Pick the flooring for your kitchen. Select flooring to complement the wall color you have chosen for the kitchen remodel. For example, if you chose beige walls, select wood flooring or brown tile. Price flooring before you purchase it to ensure you financially can afford your selection.

Select appliances for the kitchen. Appliances range in size and price. Take your budget for the kitchen remodel into account when selecting and purchasing your appliances.

Purchase the faucet for the kitchen. Faucets add a decorative touch and nice detail to a kitchen. When selecting your new kitchen faucet, take into account the number of holes in your sink. A traditional one-handle faucet fits a sink with three holes. A faucet with a sprayer fits a sink with four holes. This prevents you from having to make a hole in your sink to accommodate your new faucet.

Pick your kitchen light fixtures. This varies depending upon the amount of natural sunlight in the kitchen and your personal preference. Light fixtures come in a variety of sizes, colors and shapes, including recessed lighting, track lighting, globe lighting and fluorescent lighting
