Clearing a Blocked Pipe
- Use a plunger on the top of the drain. Whether the pipe with the problem is a sink, tub or toilet, the top of the drain is the access point. Put the plunger over the drain so that the drain is completely covered. Pump the plunger up and down, and then run water to see if the pipe has cleared. For some clogs, the plunger is enough to clear it. For others, further steps are necessary.
- Pour approximately one cup of baking soda into the drain. Follow the baking soda with three cups of boiling water. Allow the baking soda and water to sit for about 15 to 20 minutes, then run some water into the sink.
- Pour one cup of baking soda into the drain and follow it with three cups of boiling water and one cup of vinegar. Allow the concoction to sit and bubble. The vinegar and baking soda react to create a bubbling that can eat away at the clog. Pour more water down the sink to rinse it away and check if the concoction worked properly.
