How to Prevent Rust on Chrome

Chrome is a silver colored metal used for a wide assortment of things such as furniture, bathroom and kitchen fixtures, and small home appliances. Rust occurs when the protective layer wears away, leaving the underlying metal exposed to moisture. But there are a few simple things you can do to prevent rust from forming on chrome.

Scrape off any rust with a scrubbing pad as soon as it appears. Untreated rust spreads, causing more damage.

Dry the chrome with a paper towel if it becomes wet. Dry chrome is less likely to rust.

Keep the chrome in a cool and dark place if possible. Also keep the chrome out of direct sunlight because heat increases the likelihood of rust formation. Avoid humid or damp places like bathrooms, kitchens, garages and attics, if possible.

Apply a rust-inhibiting primer to the chrome with a paint brush. These primers provide a coating on the chrome that prevents rust formation.
