How to Steam Clean Pillows
Steam cleaning your pillows is a great way to reduce the dust mites that often live inside them, according to scientists working with the National Institute of Environmental Health. Dust mites are microscopic and cause no harm to people, but their feces contain proteins that can cause allergic reactions in some. Weekly washing in hot water and the use of allergen-impermeable pillow covers in addition to steam cleaning with a floor dry steam or vapor cleaner can reduce these allergens and allow you to get back to enjoying a good night's sleep.
-
Remove the pillow's cover.
-
Turn the floor steam cleaner on according to the manufacturer's instructions. Be sure to fill the tank's reservoir with water and attach any cleaning pads included with the machine.
-
Place the pillow on a clean floor or table.
-
Place the steam cleaner's head on the top of the pillow and slowly move it down the surface of the pillow. Repeat until you steam the entire surface.
-
Flip the pillow and repeat step four.
-
Leave the pillow uncovered for five to 10 minutes to allow it to dry. Then replace the pillow's cover.
