How to Disassemble a Solenoid Valve

Carl Pruit

The solenoid valve is designed to change electrical energy into a magnetic field, allowing a motor or device to be put into motion. The solenoid valve is activated by a switch and can occasionally burn out, requiring the valve to be replaced or rebuilt. Disassembling the solenoid valve is not difficult, but it takes a little patience to remove the individual parts. You can disassemble the solenoid valve yourself with a few basic tools in about an hour.

  1. Verify that the system is not pressurized by opening the pressure valve with a pipe wrench before attempting to disassemble the solenoid valve.

  2. Unfasten the screws on the top of the solenoid valve with a screwdriver and turn the enclosing tube locknut counterclockwise to remove it from the solenoid valve.

  3. Take the enclosing tube and gasket off the stem of the solenoid valve body.

  4. Remove the stem and plunger of the solenoid valve from the valve body and take the seat disk off the top of the body.

  5. Lift the valve body off the solenoid valve's manual lift stem and slide the lift stem out of the solenoid valve base.
