Self storage facilities have been popping up in droves all over the country. They are becoming more and more popular for people who downsize their home, move to a new state or live in an apartment with limited storage space. The sizes of the units vary from a typical closet size to a huge 2-car garage size. Most units are accessible by driving right up to the door, while others can be on a second or third floor. Businesses use self storage for keeping old files and records. This created a need for a climate controlled units.
How Self Storage Works
Most self storage companies use a month-to-month lease for their customers. This gives the option of having a little more time to move your belongings into your new home, or storing things for months or years. Some require a security deposit upfront in case you damage the unit or just don't pay your rent. You buy your own lock for the unit so no one else has access. Security is a big issue with self storage companies. Normally units are fenced off with barbed wire. A security gate will either have a key entry or a key pad entry where the customer is given an access code. Security cameras are often installed at every corner and down every isle of a facility. In some facilities, each unit has its own security system, and when you access the gate with your own special code, it deactivates the alarm to your unit. Some of the larger self storage companies also have resident managers that live on the site.
What You Cannot Store
Self storage facilities will not allow you to store live animals. Explosives and flammable gases and liquids are off limits too. You may store lawn mowers, power tools and motorcycles, but the gas has to be drained out and removed. Nothing illegal may be stored in a unit, and also no hazardous or toxic items. Most companies will not allow paint or paint cleaners either. Perishables and food items are also not allowed because they attract rodents and bugs.
