Safe & Effective Way to Rid Ants in a House With Pets

Ants can become very troublesome when they enter the home, as they create an unclean feeling and tend to multiply quickly. When there are no pets in the home, it is easy to use pesticides that contain harsh chemicals to kill the ants. When you have pets, however, it is important to find a solution that will get rid of the ants without risking your pet ingesting any harmful pesticides.

Dish Detergent

Liquid dish detergent works well to kill ants and keep them away. In a spray bottle, mix a solution of 2 cups water and 10 drops of your normal liquid dish detergent. Spray directly onto ants when you see them, as well as window sills, doorways or wherever they appear to enter the home from.

Mint also works at a natural deterrent that will keep ants away. Brew a pot of mint tea and leave the used tea bags lying on your countertop in a dish. Alternately, crush a few fresh mint leaves and sprinkle them along walls and entryways, or mix a solution of one cup water and five drops mint essential oil in a spray bottle. Spray the solution onto doorways, window sills or wherever ants appear to migrate.

Peppermint also deters ants, and kills them on contact. In a spray bottle, mix one cup of water and 10 drops of peppermint essential oil. Spray the solution onto ants, and also spray areas where they appear to be entering the home. Alternately, shred a bar of peppermint soap and place near entryways and windows.

Lemon Juice

The acidic qualities in lemon juice and its strong scent will keep ants at bay without harming your pets. In a spray bottle, mix one cup water with 1/2 cup lemon juice. Spray on windows and entryways, along with other areas of the home that ants seem to migrate to. This solution will kill ants on contact and keep them away.

A spray bottle solution of two cups water, one cup white vinegar will also kill ants, and deter new ants from entering the home. Spray the solution in doorways, window sills, cracks and crevices to keep ants at bay.
